Ouch ... Wordpress trashed my old blog.

Well, it certainly didn't take long for me to hit a problem :-(

Wordpress has this tempting little "Import" button in the administrator panel. When you click on it, it offers to import your existing blog content from a variety of places, such as blogger.com. That seemed convenient, so I told it to import my site, and then sat back as it defaced my blog! It replaced my theme (which I had spent considerable time customizing) with this ugly page that looks like a server error, with some advertising for Wordpress. If I hadn't known better, I'd have thought my site had been hit with a rootkit.

Yes, I know Wordpress warns you to back up your blog before using import, and I didn't, but that's not the point. Since the beginning of time it has been common knowledge that the phrase "make sure to back up your files" is supposed to mean "in case something goes wrong", not "so I can freely trash your site". Kind of rude. It should have at the very least told me in bold red text that it was going to make changes to my site.

Oh well. It didn't import even half the content correctly, so I'm just going to start fresh and not make any further attempts to pull the old content over.

Anyways, an early strike against Wordpress for this one. Fair warning for anyone else tempted by the "Import" button ...
